As I learned during my Guerrilla Information Marketing Certified Trainer course of study, one of the best ways to build or rather structure your business is to focus on the development of profit centers. With this in mind, I recently decided to conduct an experiment that involved using Twitter to take a free information product and convert it into a profit center. This article discusses how you can do the exact same thing.

Your first step is to select a product that can be digitally delivered, downloaded if you will. In my case, I chose an instructional video series called

Blogging Made Easy with WordPress

I chose this particular package because from a practical perspective, both novice and seasoned affiliate bloggers would be well served by having this tutorial as both an introduction and a refresher to the WordPress blogging platform. The point being that whatever digital product you select, be sure that it delivers instant value to your target market.

In the case of the video series, the set of 10 videos were short, informative, and had additional intrinsic market value given the fact that Master Resale Rights conveyed with the package.

Because my intent was to develop one or more blog posts on how to use some of what’s discussed in the videos to enhance the blog monetization efforts of the readership, it was important that the package be delivered at no cost so that there would be no obstacle for those reading the blog posts to acquire the package for the purpose of having a contextual frame of reference for what they would be reading about. Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is a very broad field that can be confusing to those just getting their feet wet in Internet publishing and e-commerce. Because of that, the so-called SEO “gurus” typically focus on a small handful of SEO techniques that cover the basics of optimizing a website for good rankings in the search engines.

Keyword density

This is a simple one that most people are familiar with. Getting your keyword density right by repeating a certain word or phrase enough times (but not too many times) in a page or article means the search engines are more likely to give you a good ranking when people search for that keyword or phrase.

Content Placement

Search engines are busy beasts. They have to filter though millions of pages. At the end of the day search engines are just software robots… and software robots and the hardware they run on can be quickly overworked. To protect against this, some search engines may only index a page up to a certain point, so make sure your most important content containing your keywords comes first.

Header Tags

The use of header tags such as h1, h2 and so on is also a good way to get the search engines to take notice of particular keywords in your pages and articles. Most search engines assign weight to keywords according to the level of the header tag used - h1 being the highest and h6 the lowest and so on.

Alt and Title Attributes

A great way to get a few extra instances of your keyword(s) into your page or article is to provide any images with “alt” and “title” attributes containing those keywords.

As noted earlier, the above methods of search engine optimisation are all common to most people getting into Internet publishing. What we want to focus on is an equally important, but often overlooked, aspect of SEO: website structure.

The previous methods of optimizing a website are all aimed at convincing a search engine that a particular page is worthy of a high ranking on its own merits. But as everyone knows, inbound links to a page or website play a big role - arguably the biggest role - in determining search engine rankings.

For a new website, links from other websites may be somewhat difficult to come by, at least in any large number. Some SEO commentators have suggested that search engines may index every page of a website as though they were all separate websites.

Thus a link from one page to another page in the same website would in this case pass on the same kind of “link juice” that determines search engine rankings as a link from an external site.

This is where site structure comes in.

A website can be structured to make sure that the flow of link juice is building up the pages you most want to get a high ranking for. The home page is a good place to start. Every page of your website is probably linking back to your home page, giving it a nice small boost of link juice to start out with. Additionally, any external sites you do manage to win a link from will most likely link to your home page.

Now that your home page has a nice bit of link juice to play with, you want to make sure that the most important pages of your site are linked to directly from that home page. The further from the home page that another page sits (read: the more clicks it takes to reach a particular page), the less link juice it may end up with.

It used to be popular to build “deep” websites that went down several layers for the sake of effective page management, but with search engines playing such a major role in the economy of a website, “shallow” is now arguably better.

RAID technology is the use of multiple disks to emulate the performance of one disk. This is usually done to increase the safety and redundancy of data, the speed of read/write performance, or a mixture of both. It has great use in the management of corporate data.

Data is integral to today’s businesses. Information is said to be power and right fully so, especially when you consider the nature of the economy of the modern world in this age we call the Information Age.

This has led to the explosion of the integration of Information Technology into most businesses. Most businesses employ some sort of Information System which stores sensitive information vital to a broad spectrum of operations.

These systems may be reliable, especially as technology increases the amount and accuracy of information stored in various media and systems. However, the probability that these systems will crash or that data will be lost cannot be ignored.

Most data crashes occur when some physical or logical error is introduced into a system. Hard disks, CD-ROMs, Tape Drives and other storage media can and will fail eventually. This could be caused by a host reasons — power outages, physical damage to media, head crashes, motor problems and the like.

2. Know Your Problem — It may take a little training to know the difference, but many of the RAID problems can be solved by using readily available RAID data recovery tools. If in the event that such software does not work, then you may consider the services of a professional data recovery expert.

4. Invest in Maintenance — While using precious hours backing up and maintaining your RAID can prove to be taxing, and by all means unnecessary, you only have to look at a professional data recovery bill to realize that it was all worth it.

No matter how big or small, your business needs to have a security and recovery plan in place that determines what risks you have, helps protect against those risks and sets plans in place to handle the most likely types of losses you may experience. Your plan should also look at the both the ‘physical’ and the ‘virtual’ aspects of your business.

Start by considering the types of risks to which your business may be vulnerable. What if your business information was lost or stolen? Do you have customer files or records, tax receipts, bank statements, business plans, customer work products?

Next, consider the physical aspects of your business that may be vulnerable. Do you have unique office equipment, inventory, computers or trade specific tools?

Finally, look at how you do business. Do you rely on technology, the internet or employees with unique skills? Does your business model depend on repeatable processes that are unique to your business?

Now, consider what would happen to your business if these parts of your business were lost, destroyed or stolen. Could you continue operating if you lost your client files? Could you be sued by customers if their personal information was exposed? Could you be the target of negative publicity? Could your competitors benefit if they gained access to the information? What if you lost email access for a day? What if that key employee suddenly left for another job? What if your office space caught fire or was flooded?

Your security and recovery plan should put in place the safeguards and policies and procedures to prevent some of these risks and the potential to negatively impact your business. Physical access to buildings is relatively easy to control although most small business have little more than a lock on the front door. Should you consider locking file drawers? Is inventory controlled? Does every employee have access, even to things that are not part of his or her job? Could a disgruntled or fired employee return to the workspace after hours with an extra key copy?

Your plan should consider how to protect the ‘virtual’ parts of your business also. Do you have backups of any important files? Do you have passwords, account numbers and other ‘keys’ securely guarded? Do your computers have virus and firewall protection and is it up-to-date? Do you have internet and email usage policies in place to protect your employees form harassment charges?

What about remote employees or workers who ‘take work home?’ In today’s highly mobile environment vital business information can now be easily accessed outside of your physical controls? Do your employees know how to safeguard laptops, cell phones, flash drives or even print outs of business information once they leave your workspace? What if a laptop is stolen from a worker’s car or home or hotel room? Do you have a backup of the data that was on the laptop? What if your employees are accessing your information from a coffee shop Wi-Fi? How do you know if your clients and business are protected?

Lastly, your security and recovery plan should consider how you would handle the most likely losses. For instance, if the computer that holds all your sales information crashes, you should probably have a plan to immediately restore that information from a backup. Where is the backup tape or disk kept? Who has access to it and most importantly, who knows how to restore a backup? If you office is flooded, how quickly can you relocate? Can some employees work from home or other remote locations temporarily? If client information is stolen, do you have a way to contact them?
